CERTIFICATION AND ACCREDITATION PROGRAMS

There is a difference between certification and accreditation

Certification comes from a college or university, through a program of study and receipt of a certificate

  • The only true workforce development related certification is "Nationally Certified Career Counselor" because it requires a Master's degree in Counseling

Accreditation comes from a professional association

  • Accreditation is “supposed” to be better since it is credentialing done by peers in the field and usually requires work experience; anyone can go to school (no experience required) and get a certificate.

  • However, the process of accreditation is the strength of the credential; should require testing. Self-certification is not a strong accreditation.
